As time ticks on, sun spots and pigmented patches can appear on our skin which can be difficult to treat. They come under the condition "hyperpigmentation", which describes where the skin appears darker in spots or larger patches. It can be caused by sun exposure, hormonal changes or inflammation in the skin causing the overproduction of melanin by melanocyte cells.
As melanin is the pigment that gives skin its colour, an increase in production causes darker spots to form. But hyperpigmentation is often accompanied by inflammation and this skin type needs to be managed slowly and gently.
